MLK day fatpacking

Heath and I watched the end of the late playoff football game on Sunday night then took off at about 9pm for about an 1hr 45minute ride from my house down south west along the MN river.  It was bed time once we got set up.  Heath slept in an Alpine Bivy I slept in my Direkt 2 tent.  The Direkt 2 is really warm and I like to have a free standing tent in the snow.  

 We slept in a marsh like area with these stick trees all around.  Blocked the wind well.  This is a perfect spot for winter camping that would be impossibly buggy and wet in the summer

 We should have taken the time to eat a real breakfast before our return ride.  There is a lot of up hill coming out of the Minnesota river valley and I would have been much stronger if I had eaten.  Still made good time and really enjoyed the ride.

 Sunday (1-5-14) to Monday (1-6-14) slept out.  22 below in Chanhassen when I got up.  Stayed warm all night.

 Used my old wool Navy? face mask and it really made a big difference.  I could breathe and did not get close to frost bite on my face.  Hat pulled over my eyes in my sleep selfie pic.

 Going to bed.  It was windy.  Had to tie out the tent to the very frozen ground.

 During the day on Sunday (1-5-14) Heath and I rode from 35w towards Cedar ave.  Great trail conditions.

 On Saturday (1-4-14) I taught Ella how to skate again.  We have done this one time a year on about four occasions in her life.  Just rarely enough that she has to learn all over again each time.  Cold but fun time.

 We cooked some steak in a hot oil fondue then dipped fruit in a chocolate fondue.

 The girls decorated Susan's cake for her birthday.

 Maya was a little super star at her gymnastics event.  With all the parents and other older gymnastics girls cheering Maya and her other Dynamite team members on it was a really fun event.  

 Ling Hui made the best beef tendon dish I have ever had.  Amazing.

Maya and I started the new year out with a bowl of Menudo.   The Mexican grocery store at Marschall and Gorman st in Shakopee has the best Menudo I have every had.   So good.  

Sanibel Island trip report

 Fun times with Susan's parents, her brothers and their wife's and kids.  Ding Darling wild life sanctuary is right here also but the golf course is were all the best animal watching happens.   Ella is kind of a chicken when it comes to kayaking in gator infested waters with jumping fish all around.  (I am not so sure how many gators were really around.)

The Santa story is a little different down here.

 Maya always enjoys a good napkin hat joke.  She loves nut crackers but is always a bit disappointed that ones like this are just for looks.  

 Three generations of people I like.  It is good to have such great in-laws.

 Maya really really wanted to know what she looks like when she is asleep and gave me permission to turn the light on for a good pic.  Like everyone who sees what they look like asleep she was a little disappointed.  She is really starting to read better each day.  Hop on Pop is her go to book and she can read much of it.  Today out of the blue from the back of the car she says "Dad if you take the b off of beast is it east?"  

 Q got a new Necro Pug.  Rode from 35w to Cedar.  Sunny, 0 degrees and perfectly packed snow.   I love the creative paths that develop in the winter.   It is a whole new trail compared to the summer version.  

 Maya has a hard time reaching the sink to wash her hands.  She is a creative little chimp.
 Maya announced while playing dress up the other day that she was a princess.  While asking her questions about it she made it clear that she was not the kind of princess I was talking about but rather.."I am the kind of princess who walks around all day and takes pictures with little kids."

 Ella had her first choir concert.  She was excited and nervous in a wonderfully human kind of way.  I got to meet and briefly talk with her three best friends from school who all seem like great kids.  I am often amazed at the lack of drama in her friend relationships.  Especially since Ella said "we are all like sisters."

 Slept out on the coldest night this year.  AM temp was 15 below zero Fahrenheit.   This is the new warranty direkt 2 tent after the first one proved to be less than waterproof.  No chance to try this one in the rain.  It works great in the cold.

Mazy and I made a pre winter final visit to the tap-able maple trees that I identified last summer.   Mazy had a great time making the Turkeys fly from tree to tree.  About 20 of them were nested down about 40 feet up in the trees and some how thought Mazy was a danger.  I suppose Racoons might be something that could get them up there.  Very cool to see a bunch of giant turkeys flying  over head in the forest.

 When I see trees with light like this I first think of Charles Beck wood cuts and then I think of Jackson Pollock paintings.  It would be interesting to do a painting in a Pollock like pouring/dripping style to mimic the mess of overlapping trees.  Maybe five, maybe 10 or more layers of trees starting with the back ones and overlapping towards the front.

 Got to see the new HED Carbon rim's at Trail Head in Champlin and again at the Angry catfish.  They are light and stupid expensive.  Don't seem very refined at all.  No lip on the rim is interesting.  

 Ella is a very good pretend Vet.  Googly eye transplant on the deer and she fabricated a new ear for the little dog and then implanted it.  Mazy's stuffed animal attacks are keeping her in business.

Fat Bike Packing to Gifford Lake

Heath and I rode along the Minnesota River south west of Chaska from my house last weekend.  Goal was an easy ride to an easy over night camping experience at some random spot along the trail from Chaska to Belle Plaine.  

 We did not go very far since night was coming fast.  A wrong turn was a good time to take a pic.

 On front is a Revelate sling with a dry bag that held my tent, sleeping bag and poncho/tarp.  I also tried out a Revelate feed bag this trip in place of the gas tank bag.

We took lights but got to the random place we camped before dark.  In the future I want to go to here to camp.

 I made a berbere pine nut vermicelli and olive oil dish that tuned out great.   I definitely need to do this again.  It had big flavor a small carrying size and a lot of good calories.  Toasting the pine nuts, berbere and a little salt over the fire added a great smoky fresh toasted dimension to the dish.

 Heath used his Nemo bivy tenty thing.  I think the bright color makes it look less like a body bag.

 I used a Surly junk strap to tie the MLD duomid to a tree branch so I would not need a pole inside.   I am really loving the no floor tent design.  It is easier to manage dirty shoes and potentially wet objects inside the tent and you get one more level of being connected with the outdoors.

 If you click the pic below to enlarge it you can kind of see that Heath has added another stem and bar to his bike to work like my handle bare bag holding sling setup.  He strapped a dry bag to the extra bar and stem which prevents it from interfering with the bar you hang onto.  I think it works as good or better than my more costly set up and it looks so good I didn't notice he had an extra stem until he pointed it out.  Only down side is that it would be harder to take off if you did not want the extra stem on between camp trips.
