<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Been brewing Kombucha for most of a year now and love it. Basically it is fermented sweetened tea from a technique that has been around for thousands of years. A symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast eat the sugar and minerals in tea and make a bubbly tangy beverage that makes you feel great. <a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FlcnDsZjbBM/WG3TWji9VAI/AAAAAAAAkI8/PzCsVCdCk-g8-2j3AvBu-4EkZBu2KTVvgCKgB/s1600/20161111_203435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FlcnDsZjbBM/WG3TWji9VAI/AAAAAAAAkI8/PzCsVCdCk-g8-2j3AvBu-4EkZBu2KTVvgCKgB/s320/20161111_203435.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I add a little flavorings to a secondary fermentation to make an even better drink. Honey and<br />
vanilla bean is my favorite. <br />

Maya received a guitar from my mother for Christmas. This is her first attempt at holding it. Apparently she has not watched enough rock music being played. <br />

Maya decided yesterday that she wanted to have some glasses as a fashion item. She used her own money and bought them in the Eden Prairie mall at Claires. I am very proud of my girls. This morning they told me to stay out of the kitchen and made breakfast by themselves. And Maya is still wearing the glasses. </div>

Made up a recipe for chicken feet that I am happy with. <br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img alt="image" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1DYjNqCmWFM/VMLwKZ1iqJI/AAAAAAAAW94/AgvhR-foaS0/w334-h594-no/20150123_190638.jpg" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Found some good looking chicken feet at the Lakewinds co op and started the cook by cutting their nails. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I have had chicken feet a few times before and they always kind of grossed me out. I suspected the soggy texture they had was to blame for my inability to appreciate them. I have a personal food rule however and that is that if over a million people in the world like some food item there is no reason why I shouldn't find a way to appreciate it. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I also got to use a knife I recently purchased from an old Hmong guy who makes them at one of the Hmong malls in St. Paul. I love how he made it out of repurposed materials. All about function rather than form. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Pressure cooked them for 30 minutes. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
After the pressure cook I put three different sauces on them. A hoisin sauce, a Zatarains Blackened seasoning and butter sauce and a sauce I made up with what is in the pic (honey, Sriracha, fish sauce and sesame oil). This last one was the best by far. I put a little off of equal parts of each ingredient with a little more hot sauce and a little less fish sauce. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #213d30; font-family: 'lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11.8181819915771px; line-height: 15.27272605896px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Onto my large egg cooked direct at about 450 until browned up a bit. Then onto the plate. The texture was much more to my liking. Crispy parts mixed with soft connective tissue, collagen and fatty parts all in a tasty sauce. I really enjoyed these chicken feet and will definitely be making them again. </div>

Christmas with the in-laws on Sanibel Island this year. I feel very lucky to have such great in-laws. This Year Vicky made a book for me out of pic's from this blog. I felt a little bad about not posting for so long after getting it but also inspired to post some more. Knowing that even a couple people value pics and words is all the motivation I need to keep throwing stuff up. <br />

I am a little to sucky to feel comfortable golfing with the big kids (Mike and John) so Vic and I went out and had a great time. We decided to keep score off of our puts only to help with par. <br />

Uncle Mike did a great job teaching the girls tennis but Maya found in the end that being the ball girl was much more rewarding. The clay courts are definitely my favorite surface to play on. <br />

I have been needing to frame and reframe a bunch of Artcrank posters for two years. Felt great to get it done. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IKjFbnmW6t0/UzeNfZ-KA8I/AAAAAAAASD4/hseH1-yPUNw/s1600/20140329_171924.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IKjFbnmW6t0/UzeNfZ-KA8I/AAAAAAAASD4/hseH1-yPUNw/s1600/20140329_171924.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
Bike commuter legs was my first Artcrank poster from year one or two of the event? I don't really remember. After hours of framing posters this was my last one. I broke the glass just as I was finishing up. Grrrr. Ace Hardware cut a new piece only after the old guy working there said that he was not able to measure and cut the glass with the metric numbers I took in. I suggested we get one of the tape measures on the wall to help. He wants the metric system to go away since "no one wants them pushing it down our throats." <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ulj39LXQ0pM/UzeNfV-OmhI/AAAAAAAASD4/Nigd0k4qBxE/s1600/20140329_124235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ulj39LXQ0pM/UzeNfV-OmhI/AAAAAAAASD4/Nigd0k4qBxE/s1600/20140329_124235.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
A few pre framed versions of the posters. They are not the best quality pics because my original intent for them was to use my fancy phone stylus to write the dimensions of the posters on each pic. I did it but then found that over the last two years I actually had collected all the frames I needed for the project. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have been needing a new down comforter and found a great solution. Get one from my favorite sleeping bag company, Western Mountaineering. My reasoning is this. It is made with great quality down (850+ fill), it is beautifully made in a relatively small company, it uses ultralight materials, it is a very generous size and is priced cheaper than similar sized and filled comforters. You can get a down comforter that is just fine at Ikea for half the price. I used one like that happily for about 8 years. I like this one way more. Other details include that it is grey on the other side, doesn't look so shiny in person and can be used with a duvet. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ilt_v6vqUMk/UzeNfdr3wcI/AAAAAAAASD4/SH-Fob-MRcY/s1600/20140328_150323.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ilt_v6vqUMk/UzeNfdr3wcI/AAAAAAAASD4/SH-Fob-MRcY/s1600/20140328_150323.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>

Ride is great on the road and the Knards roll faster than I thought. I am excited to see how it does on gravel. Tektros disc compatible road brake levers gotten for $24. Still looking for a new insulation material for my grill cozy. The box works ok. I mostly need wind blocking and then just a little insulation. I have looked into auto firewall material, wood stove insulation, fireplace insulation, hot water heater and welding blankets and other things all over the internet. I found a couple of industrial products that are very expensive and likely not worth the gamble. If any of you see an insulating material that can handle about 800F let me know. <br />

It is really hard to get close to a turkey for a pic. I think this guy likes the little bit of open grass in our yard. Every time he hears or sees me move in the house he flys down to the farthest part of the woods a couple hundred yards away. Beautiful to watch. <br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-avCDoXITBt0/UxYO5k-M1tI/AAAAAAAARoE/0y4RU4p7cvc/s1600/20140301_182649.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-avCDoXITBt0/UxYO5k-M1tI/AAAAAAAARoE/0y4RU4p7cvc/s1600/20140301_182649.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
I have decided I like state forests a lot more than state parks and Paul Bunyan seems like a good state forest. State forests seem to have few if any facilities and you can camp most anywhere. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2QEqPVXWius/UxYO5jI8BLI/AAAAAAAARoE/4B7SOBybA0w/s1600/20140301_174553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2QEqPVXWius/UxYO5jI8BLI/AAAAAAAARoE/4B7SOBybA0w/s1600/20140301_174553.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
To hall gear I used a Pulk sled and Heath used his back. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1kTGSXbcPMc/UxYO5u8nqqI/AAAAAAAARoE/t8TAdttovnw/s1600/20140301_171439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1kTGSXbcPMc/UxYO5u8nqqI/AAAAAAAARoE/t8TAdttovnw/s1600/20140301_171439.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
We set up camp and went to bed but then had to pack back up in the night and make our way out of the forest because I was not able to stay warm for some reason. I suspect my thyroid med's are not working right since our gear and a past experience suggest this is very doable. -20F and getting colder while in a relatively remote location meant that I was not willing to try and tough it out. Heath was super cool about being woken up to pack up and leave in the night. I feel bad about it. <br />

No pics of the escape but the moonless night mixed with the super dry air made for stunning star gazing as we marched out of the woods. </div>

I have been playing around with sewing and need models. Ella and I designed and made Maya a skirt. We are proud and those are model poses made up by Maya. I have also hemmed some pants, fixed holes in clothes and generally played around with the machine. Learning to set it up, fill a bobbin and thread the sewing machine is the hardest part. Over the past few years I have been collecting wool and other nice materials for sewing projects. Wool cycling hats are my next goal. <br />

I recently got a copy of the cooking reference book <a href="http://www.gourmet.com/food/2008/06/classiccookbook_larousse" target="_blank"> larousse gastronomique (196</a><u>0</u>) at a thrift store. In a pic of a "modern kitchen" in the 1960 book was this little pot. Later that week while at Iverson's Scandinavian Imports I found out that the company Ittala made it and it is in the museum of modern art. The internet told me Ittala is making it again but only in black. The name of the pot is a Timo Sarpaneva. The wood handle also works to take the lid off. <br />

I need to insulate my BBQ grill that I use to roast coffee. I currently use an old computer box cut open to insulate and block the wind from messing with my roast temps. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5Zt8rNNRcdw/Uw48vPJ-WnI/AAAAAAAARfc/UIQdUlDcSuw/s1600/20140211_192341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5Zt8rNNRcdw/Uw48vPJ-WnI/AAAAAAAARfc/UIQdUlDcSuw/s1600/20140211_192341.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
My goal is to make a grill cozy that is more permanent. I have been to Home Depot, Mennards, Ace, a fire place store and an auto parts store looking for a material that is good to about 800 degrees. I found this metallic coated fiberglass at Home Depot and made a cozy with it. What appeared to be a metal exterior melted to the grill on my first roast. The internet has a couple of similar looking products that would work at my temp needs but they are often in big rolls and cost more than I want for this project. Back to my cardboard box for now. <br />

I have too much girth for my Western Mountaineering Bison -40 sleeping bag. Midwest Mountaineering contacted them and the owner said he would make a one off bag expander for me. They make a similar product for summer bags but as far as I know they have never made one for a winter bag. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It took over 4 months but I got it and it is amazing. Looks like my bag had a tadpole bag baby. To have the owner hand make me this beautiful item for $69 is amazing. It is jam packed with 850 (likely higher) down fill. The expander is also made with windstopper material on the outside like the bag. It is sewn beautifully like all WM products. <br />

My only regret is that I had to sleep with it part way open much of the coldest winter we have had in years waiting for it to be finished.<br />

It should get cold next year too. With the Gore Windstopper shell I can use the bag with a ground pad and without a tent. I can't wait to use it this weekend. Come on cold!<br />

Heath and I watched the end of the late playoff football game on Sunday night then took off at about 9pm for about an 1hr 45minute ride from my house down south west along the MN river. It was bed time once we got set up. Heath slept in an Alpine Bivy I slept in my Direkt 2 tent. The Direkt 2 is really warm and I like to have a free standing tent in the snow. </div>

We slept in a marsh like area with these stick trees all around. Blocked the wind well. This is a perfect spot for winter camping that would be impossibly buggy and wet in the summer<br />

We should have taken the time to eat a real breakfast before our return ride. There is a lot of up hill coming out of the Minnesota river valley and I would have been much stronger if I had eaten. Still made good time and really enjoyed the ride. <br />

Used my old wool Navy? face mask and it really made a big difference. I could breathe and did not get close to frost bite on my face. Hat pulled over my eyes in my sleep selfie pic. <br />

Fun times with Susan's parents, her brothers and their wife's and kids. Ding Darling wild life sanctuary is right here also but the golf course is were all the best animal watching happens. Ella is kind of a chicken when it comes to kayaking in gator infested waters with jumping fish all around. (I am not so sure how many gators were really around.)<br />

Maya really really wanted to know what she looks like when she is asleep and gave me permission to turn the light on for a good pic. Like everyone who sees what they look like asleep she was a little disappointed. She is really starting to read better each day. Hop on Pop is her go to book and she can read much of it. Today out of the blue from the back of the car she says "Dad if you take the b off of beast is it east?" <br />

Q got a new Necro Pug. Rode from 35w to Cedar. Sunny, 0 degrees and perfectly packed snow. I love the creative paths that develop in the winter. It is a whole new trail compared to the summer version. <br />

Maya has a hard time reaching the sink to wash her hands. She is a creative little chimp.<br />
Maya announced while playing dress up the other day that she was a princess. While asking her questions about it she made it clear that she was not the kind of princess I was talking about but rather.."I am the kind of princess who walks around all day and takes pictures with little kids." <br />

Ella had her first choir concert. She was excited and nervous in a wonderfully human kind of way. I got to meet and briefly talk with her three best friends from school who all seem like great kids. I am often amazed at the lack of drama in her friend relationships. Especially since Ella said "we are all like sisters." <br />

Slept out on the coldest night this year. AM temp was 15 below zero Fahrenheit. This is the new warranty direkt 2 tent after the first one proved to be less than waterproof. No chance to try this one in the rain. It works great in the cold. <br />

Mazy and I made a pre winter final visit to the tap-able maple trees that I identified last summer. Mazy had a great time making the Turkeys fly from tree to tree. About 20 of them were nested down about 40 feet up in the trees and some how thought Mazy was a danger. I suppose Racoons might be something that could get them up there. Very cool to see a bunch of giant turkeys flying over head in the forest. <br />

When I see trees with light like this I first think of Charles Beck wood cuts and then I think of Jackson Pollock paintings. It would be interesting to do a painting in a Pollock like pouring/dripping style to mimic the mess of overlapping trees. Maybe five, maybe 10 or more layers of trees starting with the back ones and overlapping towards the front. <br />

Got to see the new HED Carbon rim's at Trail Head in Champlin and again at the Angry catfish. They are light and stupid expensive. Don't seem very refined at all. No lip on the rim is interesting. <br />

Ella is a very good pretend Vet. Googly eye transplant on the deer and she fabricated a new ear for the little dog and then implanted it. Mazy's stuffed animal attacks are keeping her in business.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Heath and I rode along the Minnesota River south west of Chaska from my house last weekend. Goal was an easy ride to an easy over night camping experience at some random spot along the trail from Chaska to Belle Plaine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UNM9ViT_FIw/UnfKcuZuJQI/AAAAAAAAP5s/RKM3moerU0I/s1600/20131102_174457.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UNM9ViT_FIw/UnfKcuZuJQI/AAAAAAAAP5s/RKM3moerU0I/s400/20131102_174457.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We did not go very far since night was coming fast. A wrong turn was a good time to take a pic. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SKHhechv-BA/UnfKcu4QjOI/AAAAAAAAP5s/tI85XBki2ws/s1600/20131102_180220.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SKHhechv-BA/UnfKcu4QjOI/AAAAAAAAP5s/tI85XBki2ws/s640/20131102_180220.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
On front is a Revelate sling with a dry bag that held my tent, sleeping bag and poncho/tarp. I also tried out a Revelate feed bag this trip in place of the gas tank bag. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aqSWBjHp7T8/UnfKciJObqI/AAAAAAAAP5s/i8i6KC1cWuE/s1600/20131102_181647.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aqSWBjHp7T8/UnfKciJObqI/AAAAAAAAP5s/i8i6KC1cWuE/s400/20131102_181647.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We took lights but got to the random place we camped before dark. In the future I want to go to <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!data=!1m4!1m3!1d677!2d-93.6192889!3d44.7531706!2m1!1e3&fid=7">here to camp.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n4B928qdSwQ/UnfKcnRjbRI/AAAAAAAAP5s/nZkyx1zT89U/s1600/20131102_193916.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n4B928qdSwQ/UnfKcnRjbRI/AAAAAAAAP5s/nZkyx1zT89U/s640/20131102_193916.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
I made a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berbere">berbere</a> pine nut vermicelli and olive oil dish that tuned out great. I definitely need to do this again. It had big flavor a small carrying size and a lot of good calories. Toasting the pine nuts, berbere and a little salt over the fire added a great smoky fresh toasted dimension to the dish. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z-bRsd56jAw/UnfKcuTMzDI/AAAAAAAAP5s/qIAo1OSqFi4/s1600/20131103_072228.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z-bRsd56jAw/UnfKcuTMzDI/AAAAAAAAP5s/qIAo1OSqFi4/s640/20131103_072228.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
Heath used his Nemo bivy tenty thing. I think the bright color makes it look less like a body bag. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tvmtxbnRTRg/UnfKch1CLkI/AAAAAAAAP5s/DXr1THttAEk/s1600/20131103_072243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tvmtxbnRTRg/UnfKch1CLkI/AAAAAAAAP5s/DXr1THttAEk/s640/20131103_072243.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
I used a Surly junk strap to tie the <a href="http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=105">MLD duomid</a> to a tree branch so I would not need a pole inside. I am really loving the no floor tent design. It is easier to manage dirty shoes and potentially wet objects inside the tent and you get one more level of being connected with the outdoors. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OpoQIVqqr-w/UnfKclAG48I/AAAAAAAAP5s/IABfpbEmORM/s1600/20131103_072310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OpoQIVqqr-w/UnfKclAG48I/AAAAAAAAP5s/IABfpbEmORM/s400/20131103_072310.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If you click the pic below to enlarge it you can kind of see that Heath has added another stem and bar to his bike to work like my handle bare bag holding sling setup. He strapped a dry bag to the extra bar and stem which prevents it from interfering with the bar you hang onto. I think it works as good or better than my more costly set up and it looks so good I didn't notice he had an extra stem until he pointed it out. Only down side is that it would be harder to take off if you did not want the extra stem on between camp trips. <br />

Susan had a Halloween party for the Maya age kids in the neighborhood this year the weekend before the big candy grab on the actual Halloween day. Ella had a bigger kid party of her own to go to that same day and was very sad to miss ours. <br />

Maya is a witch with very cute sheep boots. This fits my costume rule that the girls costumes should be a little bit scary and a little bit cute.<br />

In other news my Kale plant continues to amaze me. I have taken all the leaves off and eaten them maybe 5 times. Each time I am convince it is done producing for the season. Learning how to make kale chips has increased my kale intake a lot. <br />

I got the Samsung Note 3 phone and Galaxy Gear watch a few weeks ago. Like them both a lot. Unexpected benefit of having them both is my battery life is amazing. Seeing the time of day, weather, my texts, email and phone calls on the watch prevents a ton of phone battery use. Also its way more convenient. Of all the great things a smart phone is and of all the devices it replaces the last thing a smart phone needed to be for me was scratch paper. A way to make a super fast little note. Guess what the Note 3 with its stylus does really well? Take a quick note. You can even leave the little notes spread around over the top of your other app icons in a messy way if you like just like a real desk. Used the watch to take the above pic. It is of my little alcohol super cat stove heating water for tea. Heath and I have started to stop mid fat bike ride to have tea. Very pleasant. <br />

I am getting really excited to do some snow shoe/ski/fatbike winter camping this year. After doing my best to replicate all my winter gear in the backpack (minus the water) the pack with snow shoes attached as in the pic was still only 29 pounds. The gigantic -40 Western Mountaineering sleeping bag takes up half the pack. Western Mountaineering is making me a custom expander for the bag so I will fit more comfortably in it. It was to arrive this week. Unfortunately there was some mix up and a summer weight not the custom -40 expander was sent so I need to either wait or get smaller so I don't need the expander. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mwP5gZBYeOo/UlIhMEZmLQI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/oBAa5Xp2a4U/s1600/IMG_20131005_110814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mwP5gZBYeOo/UlIhMEZmLQI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/oBAa5Xp2a4U/s320/IMG_20131005_110814.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Fall over night bike camp trip was to Carver Park Reserve and started at Q's. My packing goal this year was to have everything I need to be comfortable and nothing more. And to get it all in my Revelate style bag system. No trailer, panniers or backpack. The potential for rain and cool weather made this a little harder. Tent, sleep pad, pillow, cook kit, pot, bowl and tools and tube went in and on the rear <a href="https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/Seat-Bags/Viscacha">Viscacha bag</a>, Front <a href="https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/Handle-Bar/Harness">harness </a>held an Event dry bag that contained the sleeping bag, an extra set of clothes and a down vest. The <a href="https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/Handle-Bar/Pockets">Pocket Bag</a> on top of the Event in the Sling had wind coat, mittens, gloves, sunglasses, ponch. <a href="https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/Cockpit/Gas-Tank">Gas tank bag</a> had phone, money, snacks, phone battery charge. Frame bag <a href="https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/Frame-Bags/Tangle-Frame-Bag">(Tangle)</a> had some food, the lock, and lots of room to put clothes I took off and put back on as I rode. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ze2JF6e-JDM/UlIhMGA2wII/AAAAAAAAPhQ/M_MeMUyPWcU/s1600/IMG_20131005_125230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ze2JF6e-JDM/UlIhMGA2wII/AAAAAAAAPhQ/M_MeMUyPWcU/s320/IMG_20131005_125230.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Selfie with the peleton behind. I felt great the entire trip. 28 miles each way with rain in the evening on day one and on and off rain during the ride on day two. Legs felt strong and gear choices worked well. Used the Big Agness UL2 tent and <a href="http://www.golite.com/Unisex-Z30-Quilt-Long-P46994.aspx">Golite 30 degree</a> quilt style sleeping bag. <a href="http://weatherspark.com/#!dashboard;q=Victoria%2C%20MN%2C%20USA" style="text-align: left;">Weather Spark</a> says the temp got down to 39F. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uad3eIJ95wk/UlIhMJ0aHBI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/bMS0ltX-BxI/s1600/IMG_20131005_125330.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uad3eIJ95wk/UlIhMJ0aHBI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/bMS0ltX-BxI/s320/IMG_20131005_125330.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The pannier boys. Heath on the long haul trucker. Steve rode his single speed Gunnar and used a bivey instead of a tent. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RfK0wUCMhZA/UlIhMOo8jfI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/1GT3psz23Qw/s1600/IMG_20131006_122700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RfK0wUCMhZA/UlIhMOo8jfI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/1GT3psz23Qw/s320/IMG_20131006_122700.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Sean and John used trailers. Q's REI shower pass rain pants seemed the best lower body solution for the rain. With the removable lower legs they did not over heat. Heath's Kelty poncho seemed the best up top. Good coverage even when riding and lots of ventilation. My 57 cent fleet farm plastic bag like poncho was made fun of but worked. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IzvtgpJYses/UlIhMDeAiKI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/j1hjrQn1gv4/s1600/IMG_20131006_122849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IzvtgpJYses/UlIhMDeAiKI/AAAAAAAAPhQ/j1hjrQn1gv4/s320/IMG_20131006_122849.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The rain made for a good camp experience since all the people that reserved sites near us did not show up. The food we purchased in Victoria including 6 kinds of brats, chicken wings, bacon, smoked pork shops and venison steak from Steve's most recent hunting trip was almost as good as the company. Looking forward to next year already. <br />

I am really excited about gravel road riding and enjoy it a ton every time I get out. I have developed a nice course starting at the Fleet Farm by my house. Great climbs, quiet roads and just the right length for an evening ride. <br />

I have been making kale chips from my garden's kale supply. Just rub some olive oil on and a little salt. Bake in about a 400 degree oven for 5-15 minutes depending on how crispy you like them. <br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-79ZbgqeXKJY/Uflc9K9HzYI/AAAAAAAAOi0/BFuClPlqWNw/s1600/IMG_20130723_151442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-79ZbgqeXKJY/Uflc9K9HzYI/AAAAAAAAOi0/BFuClPlqWNw/s400/IMG_20130723_151442.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I did 2 1/2 hours of fat bike exploring on the south side of the river at the old Bloomington Ferry bridge road. Lots of side trails to explore. I had Bud and Lou on and love them for slow speed exploring. Logs hidden in thick brush are much less of a problem as these tires just roll up and over most things hidden. Also the fat footprint makes extremely slow riding very stable. Almost like walking in the thick brush rather than riding. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OkcuvSGFk3M/Uflc9PwLA0I/AAAAAAAAOi0/kk_l_zba7xQ/s1600/IMG_20130723_151929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OkcuvSGFk3M/Uflc9PwLA0I/AAAAAAAAOi0/kk_l_zba7xQ/s400/IMG_20130723_151929.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
In the middle of seemingly nowhere with no sign of vehicle access I found this thing shooting out water near this old set of stairs. Note the large tree in the background that would have been inside the house suggesting the house has been gone for 50? years or more. <br />

I eventually made my way west by Blue and Fisher lake. I have been trying to make an off road route from Sibley house by Heath's house all the way to my house in Chanhassen. As a result this stretch of that route from just west of Savage to Shakopee has been on my to do ride list for some time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I found myself in some great trails back here. These are when I was getting close to the Valley Fair Grounds. <br />

Sadly I will have to go up onto paved trail and highway 101 for about a mile when I go past Valley Fair and by The Landing old time pretend town thing. At the end of my ride I talked to two other riders up on the Bloomington Ferry Bridge Road. Josh is the author of the blog <a href="http://deathrideradventure.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Full On</a> and his friend who is the main man behind athletic architects. <br />

My dad talked me into driving his 1941 Model D tractor in a Dilworth MN parade. I resisted fearing I would have a slow motion crash where I would not remember how to stop the tractor. I would then slowly careen towards and squash some old parade watcher who could not get out of his lawn chair to walk to safety. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n6rS7yxcZSA/Uflc9IZ5EKI/AAAAAAAAOi0/2oVDlkpWBU0/s1600/IMG_20130727_083022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n6rS7yxcZSA/Uflc9IZ5EKI/AAAAAAAAOi0/2oVDlkpWBU0/s400/IMG_20130727_083022.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
The 45 minute 6 mph drive from the Probstfield farm to Dilworth was some good practice time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I think Howard has 17 tractors. <br />

Not sure if I am the first person or not to do this or if I should be proud or ashamed but I was texting while driving a 72 year old tractor in a parade. <br />

Trip to Duluth and North Shore with most of our time at Blue Fin Bay. This first pic is just to remind future me to stay in cabin 69A. We apparently got lucky and called just when the owner opened it up for the time we needed. It is furnished nicely and is on the end so you have great views of the lake. It is also close to the outdoor pool, Coho Cafe and the little General store. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FCxmTKiwO_8/UeQYkbKzluI/AAAAAAAAOWA/oatWxUSSIIM/s1600/IMG_20130714_101602.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FCxmTKiwO_8/UeQYkbKzluI/AAAAAAAAOWA/oatWxUSSIIM/s400/IMG_20130714_101602.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
We saw a cool moth. Luna moth?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xuqTACbpuXA/UeQYkZW0-KI/AAAAAAAAOWA/XQZNQF7VB10/s1600/IMG_20130713_172333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xuqTACbpuXA/UeQYkZW0-KI/AAAAAAAAOWA/XQZNQF7VB10/s400/IMG_20130713_172333.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">While leaving in my car just after a ride on some remote trails this big wolf crossed the road right in front of me. He then dropped his head and stared up at me through the brush for a while before running off into the woods. This is a terrible pic of his hind quarters. If you could see it the head is on the right. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">While driving to the Trestle Inn for lunch we also saw the biggest black bear I have ever seen. Looked like a grizzly bear wearing a black bear costume. It </span><span style="text-align: left;">also </span><span style="text-align: left;">ran away. All the wild life we saw on the trip looked remarkably healthy for some </span><span style="text-align: left;">reason. Big in size, healthy fur and lively behavior. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the hikes we did was up around Oberg Mountain. I love the views found on that hike. On a later day I decided to try to ride the Cross Country Ski loop next to Oberg Mountain on the Moonlander. It was a super fun, memorable boggy death march kind of ride. My Cardio Trainer app says I was out for 95 minutes and covered 3.3 miles. That is about a half hour per mile. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This pic is a big part of my slow speed. The trail would look normal but was liquid mud just under the surface. Very weird especially since I was climbing much of the ride. Kept thinking I would climb out of the wet but never did. Lots of big moose tracks around but didn't get to see one. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ytOX44TS3E/UeQYkRcT6PI/AAAAAAAAOWA/nHVTWFl-L4M/s1600/IMG_20130713_161010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ytOX44TS3E/UeQYkRcT6PI/AAAAAAAAOWA/nHVTWFl-L4M/s400/IMG_20130713_161010.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
More pics along the ride. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R3PQ2tpT5Wg/UeQYkRzTFaI/AAAAAAAAOWA/7FdXJE2_3zs/s1600/IMG_20130713_153154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R3PQ2tpT5Wg/UeQYkRzTFaI/AAAAAAAAOWA/7FdXJE2_3zs/s400/IMG_20130713_153154.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Should have used the bud and lou wheels. <br />

Ferns are surprisingly easy to ride over. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Trestle inn is a fun drive up a little ways from the lake. Both times we have been to it we have seen our best wild life in the area. They are isolated enough that they have no phone so cash only. They do however have satellite based free wifi. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Eqq_bATukyA/UeQYkSHegGI/AAAAAAAAOWA/nda3GrDnqxo/s1600/IMG_20130712_113330.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Eqq_bATukyA/UeQYkSHegGI/AAAAAAAAOWA/nda3GrDnqxo/s400/IMG_20130712_113330.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Back side of Oberg Mountain. In the pics above I tried to ride around this lake but only made it less than half way. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Lots of fog on the trip kept the temps very comfortable. <br />

That sail boat is part of the Blue Fin Bay world of activities and is actually quite large even though it looks like a floating toy. <br />
